Shahid Afridi to Lead ICC World XI After Injured Eoin Morgan Pulls Out
Shahid Afridi |
Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi will lead the ICC World XI against West Indies in the one-off T20I at Lord’s on May 31. Initially, England’s Eoin Morgan was given the leadership role, but had to pull out of the match because of a fractured finger. Morgan’s teammate Sam Billings will replace him in the squad.
Morgan suffered an injury in his right ring finger while playing a match in the Royal London One-Day Cup against Somerset on Sunday. The left-hand batsman is expected to be fit for England’s one-off ODI against Scotland on June 10. That will be followed by a five-match ODI series against Australia.
Two other England players, Sam Curran and Tymal have also been added to the squad. All the proceeds from this match will be used to redevelop the stadia in the Caribbean, which were damaged due to hurricanes last year.
The match will also see the return of Shahid Afridi to international cricket, but only for one match. The hard-hitting all-rounder had last played for Pakistan in WT20 in 2016.
Earlier, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan and India’s Hardik Pandya also withdrew from the encounter.
ICC World XI squad: Shahid Afridi (C), Dinesh Karthik, Mitchell McClenaghan, Thisara Perera, Rashid Khan, Luke Ronchi, Shoaib Malik, Tamim Iqbal, Sandeep Lamichhane, Adil Rashid, Mohammed Shami, Sam Billings, Sam Curran, Tymal Mills
