Niranjan Shah Questions CoA's Decision to Pay Umpires More Than Domestic Players

New Delhi: The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (COA) met on April 12 and among the various decisions taken, it was decided to increase the remuneration for umpires, match referees, curators, scorers and video analysts. It was also decided that a new pay structure will be worked on for the 3-member selection panel. The minutes of the meeting were put on BCCI’s website on Wednesday.

But the move hasn’t gone down well with former BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah who feels that it is unfair to pay the umpires more than the players. “Though it is welcomed to have a raise in match fees of umpires and other match officials, it is indeed shocking and surprising that the recommended match fees of umpires would be higher than domestic senior players, which has been Rs 35000 per day. I fail to understand that how can match fee of umpires be more than players?” he asked.

Shah added to the recent outcry from former players and said that domestic cricketers are treated poorly and people forget its importance. “Domestic players are much ignored since the last couple of years. Domestic cricket is the most important and reliable platform for getting players for international tournaments. All associations put many efforts to their respective domestic teams for all domestic tournaments of BCCI. But due to reasons unknown to many of us, domestic players are being ignored. Since last domestic season, i.e. 2017-18, each team for Ranji Trophy is getting two fewer league matches than earlier format, which is a considerable financial loss to players,” he explained.

As per the minutes of the meeting, an umpire will now get Rs 40, 000 per day for a first-class, three-day or 50-over game compared to the earlier Rs 20,000. For T20 matches, it will be Rs 20,000 per match from the earlier Rs 10,000. For the match referees, it will be Rs 30,000 for four-day, three-day and one-day games while Rs 15,000 for T20 games. The scorers, who have been the least paid, will now get Rs 10,000 per match day, save T20 games where they will be paid Rs 5000. The video analysts will now get Rs 15000 per day for non-T20 games and Rs 7500 for the shortest format.
